TCP/UDP port numbers list

This is a list of TCP and UDP port numbers used by protocols for the operation of network applications. Search by port number, protocol or service, or filter by category.

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) only need one port for duplex, bidirectional traffic. They usually use port numbers that match the services of the corresponding TCP or UDP implementation, if they exist.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is responsible for maintaining the official assignments of port numbers for specific uses. However, many unofficial uses of both well-known and registered port numbers occur in practice. Similarly, many of the official assignments refer to protocols that were never or are no longer in common use. This article lists port numbers and their associated protocols that have experienced significant uptake.

This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness. The authoritative source is the IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry. Ports 1024–49151 not shown here are mostly assigned to specific vendor software.

Legend of TCP and UDP protocol table cells

YesDescribed protocol is assigned for this port by IANA and is standardized, specified, or widely used for such.
UnofficialDescribed protocol is not assigned for this port by IANA but is standardized, specified, or widely used for such.
AssignedDescribed protocol is assigned by IANA for this port, but is not standardized, specified, or widely used for such.
NoDescribed protocol is not assigned by IANA, standardized, specified, or widely used for the port.
ReservedPort is reserved by IANA, generally to prevent collision having its previous use removed. The port number may be available for assignment upon request to IANA.

The port numbers in the range from 0 to 1023 (0 to 210 − 1) are the well-known ports or system ports. They are used by system processes that provide widely used types of network services. On Unix-like operating systems, a process must execute with superuser privileges to be able to bind a network socket to an IP address using one of the well-known ports.

Frequently asked questions

What are the well-known, registered and dynamic port ranges?

Ports 0–1023 are well-known (system) ports for core services such as HTTP, SSH and SMTP. Ports 1024–49151 are registered ports that vendors can request from IANA. Ports 49152–65535 are dynamic (ephemeral) ports used for temporary outgoing connections.

What is the difference between TCP and UDP ports?

TCP is connection-oriented and reliable, so it suits web pages, email and databases. UDP is connectionless and faster, so it suits DNS lookups, streaming, VoIP and gaming. The same port number can be used by different services on TCP and UDP.

How do I check which ports are open on my server?

On Linux, ss -tulpn lists listening TCP and UDP sockets. From outside, a port scan or an external TCP monitor shows what the internet can actually reach. See our guide to checking open ports in Linux.

Which ports should never be exposed to the internet?

Databases (3306, 5432, 1433, 27017, 6379), SMB (445), RDP (3389), Docker (2375) and management interfaces should sit behind a firewall or VPN. Expose only what a service genuinely needs.

How can I monitor a port?

A TCP or UDP port monitor connects to the port on a schedule and alerts you when it stops answering. Upzilla can check any port from several locations.
