402 Payment Required
Payment is needed before the request can be completed.
What it means
This code was reserved for future use in digital payments and has no standard meaning. In practice, APIs and online services use it when a request is blocked by billing: a plan that ran out, a failed payment or a quota that needs paying for.
Common causes
- A subscription that has expired or was cancelled
- A failed card payment
- A usage quota that has been used up
- A paid feature requested on a free plan
How to fix it
If you are a visitor
- Check your subscription and payment details with the service
- Contact the service if your account is in good standing
If you run the site
- Check the billing status of the API or service you call
- Update the payment method or raise the quota
- Say in the response body what the customer has to do
Catch it before your users do
