HTTP error
404 Not Found
The server cannot find the requested page.
What it means
The server is working, but there is nothing at this address. The page may have moved or been deleted, or the link may simply be wrong. A 404 does not say whether the page is gone for good: that is what 410 Gone is for.
Common causes
- A mistyped address
- A page that was deleted or moved without a redirect
- A broken link on another page or site
- A changed URL structure after a redesign or migration
- A deployment that left out some files
How to fix it
If you are a visitor
- Check the address for typos
- Go to the home page and search or browse from there
- Look for the page in a search engine
If you run the site
- Add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one
- Fix internal links that point to the missing page
- Check Search Console for the addresses that return 404
- Serve a helpful 404 page that returns a real 404 status
Catch it before your users do
You can check the status code of any address right now. To hear about 404 errors as they happen, an HTTP(S) monitor requests the page around the clock, compares the response with the status codes you expect and alerts you when it does not match.
